This is a letter I read in The Independent, a British newspaper. It is, in my opinion, a very succinct summation of the Occupy movement.

The protesters in London's financial district are not opposed to capitalism, per se; they are opposed to the abuse of power, the greed and the corruption which have led so catastrophically to spiralling unemployment, massive national debt and the dismantling of our services and infrastructure.

Despite all the banging on by politicians and financial institutions about the failure of communism and how capitalism is the only system which works, it was their decision to shift virtually all manufacturing to the communist state of China – which has somehow led to reduced production costs and yet not yielded a corresponding reduction of prices – that has been largely responsible for the collapse of western economies. This manoeuvre provided a massive short-term gain to the directors and shareholders of the companies who took advantage of the cheap, unregulated labour market, but at an incalculable long-term cost to our own industries and our workforce.

Combined with other dubious money-market activities such as gambling in commodities which may or may not exist, and trading in debt, this has been a very dangerous game. Now real people are paying with their livelihoods and with the futures of their children.
Yet still we hear the wearisome whine: "Tax the rich to excess and they'll leave our shores." Please, let them shift their tax-avoiding activities elsewhere – after all, they've already shipped all the jobs; their contribution to society is negligible and their denial of responsibility is offensive in the extreme.

Turnê européia do Radiohead terá shows em locais fechados

 

Via (Pop) O Radiohead anunciou recentemente que finalmente fará uma turnê de divulgação do seu último disco, "The King of Limbs". A banda só cai na estrada no ano que vem, mas já pensa em algumas mudanças em relação aos shows do disco anterior, "In Rainbows".

"A última vez que saímos em turnê, parecia que eram músicas do `In Rainbows´ mais os greatest hits. E não vai ser assim agora. Eu acho que vai ser predominantemente com músicas desse disco e também do último. E aí, vamos ver quais canções se encaixam nisso", disse o guitarrista Ed O`Brien à rádio BBC 6 Music.

O público da banda, de proporções gigantescas, poderá finalmente ver o grupo tocando em lugares menores. Bom, pelo menos os fãs europeus. "Alguns dos shows serão externos, mas os na Europa serão em locais fechados. Eu acho que isso é um reflexo da nossa última turnê, quando fizemos apenas apresentações em locais abertos", explicou.

"A gente tocou no calor do verão e isso comprometeu a nossa produção. Queremos dar ao Andi, nosso iluminador, uma boa oportunidade para produção. Shows externos podem ser ótimos, mas o som se dilui um pouco", concluiu o guitarrista.

The King Of Limbs lidera aumento de vendas de discos de vinil

Em 2011, as vendas de discos em vinil tiveram seus melhores resultados em seis anos, segundo a Official Charts Company, que complia os principais rankings musicais oficiais do Reino Unido.

Em relação a 2010, o aumento foi de 40%, representando um total de mais de 240 mil discos vendidos. No ano passado, foram 234 mil no mesmo período. O pico de vendas foi em 1975, quando 91,6 milhões de discos foram vendidos. Naquele ano, figuravam no ranking nomes como Elton John, Led Zeppelin e Pink Floyd.

Quem lidera a lista de 2011 é a banda Radiohead (“The King of Limbs”), seguido da cantora Adele (“21”) e o novo grupo de ex-integrantes do Oasis, Beady Eye (“Different Gear Still Speeding”).

Se as vendas continuarem nesse ritmo, as vendas chegarão a 300 mil unidades, marca alcançada pela primeira vez desde 2005, quando chegou-se à marca de 351 mil.

Nos principais mercados consumidores de música, discos de vinil retornaram às prateleiras. Em tempos de pirataria e música digital, o vinil tornou-se objeto de culto por parte de colecionadores, que valorizam a qualidade sonora superior ao MP3 e o design gráfico de capa e encarte.
